GENERAL EDUCATION/LIBERAL ARTS PHILOSOPHY

Consistent with the standards of accreditation and the best thinking of educational philosophy, theories and values, a General Education/Liberal Arts Core Curriculum is required of every student for graduation regardless of his or her area of formal technical, vocational or professional concentration. General Education is intended to impart the breadth of common knowledge, intellectual concepts, and attitudes that every educated person should possess.

American Pathways University has adopted the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree approved by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) for public colleges and universities, which requires a total of 35 academic credits. To these APU has added 21 credits to the General Education Requirement in order to accentuate the student’s breadth of knowledge in speech, computing, philosophy, and social & behavioral sciences, for a total of 56 credits. These requirements include communication (9 credits), language (9 credits), mathematics (3 credits), arts & humanities (12 credits), social & behavioral sciences (15 credits), and physical & life sciences (8 credits). APU also has adopted the CCHE mandated learning outcomes in addition to its own articulated outcomes. Please see APU’s General Education/Liberal Arts learning outcomes in the Catalog under General Education Learning Outcomes. The Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree reflects the appropriate two-year program adjustments of requirements and outcomes.

All students pursing a degree are required to complete the American Pathways University General Education/Liberal Arts Core Curriculum requirements for the A.A. or B.A. in English, speech, history, literature, philosophy and ethics, sociology, psychology, economics, science, mathematics, the fine arts, political science, and computing.
