Master’s Program

The Master of Arts degree provides a broad-based education experience that enriches the students understanding of the physical, social and intellectual world and which empowers the student to examine major national and global issues, especially as these issues relate to politics, faith commitment, and cultures, and their diversity, and to be able to apply this understanding to community leadership and to enhance the student’s current professional effectiveness or to move effectively into other professional fields. Sharpen your abilities to think, to research, and express yourself critically. It is an interdisciplinary program, generally pulling together coursework from a number of the humanities and physical and social sciences. It features curricular flexibility and interdisciplinary synthesis via a Master’s thesis.. Students will explore the origins of ideas the power of ideas in shaping social change. Contemplate the cross-cultural role of the public intellectual, explore the power of ideas and social change, investigate the politics of diversity and unity in the United States.

FACULTY

The faculty teaching in the Master of Arts are primarily American Pathways University faculty members drawn from the various departments of the University, seasoned in teaching traditional-age students and adults in interdisciplinary courses. The faculty also includes visiting professors who combine their active professional careers with classroom teaching. All Graduate faculty have the earned doctorate.

Prepare for or enhance careers in such areas as teaching, government, business, ministry, social and human services. This program will be especially valuable for inner-city ministers and social workers who have the B.A. but prefer not to attend seminary or social work graduate programs. Connect with faculty in small, evening and weekend classes and other flexible learning contexts.

REQUIREMENTS

The M.A. may be completed in two years.

Students complete the core requirements (15 credits, including a capstone thesis) and a concentration (21 credits) in education, family systems and therapy, or liberal studies.

CONCENTRATIONS

The CONCENTRATION IN EDUCATION is designed to serve teachers from the urban public school systems (e.g., the Denver Public Schools) and private school systems (e.g., the national StreetSchool NetworkTM), as well as other educators and professionals serving high-needs students in at-risk environments. Graduates of the program will be able to provide leadership for the liberating arts in urban education, effectively teach at-risk high-needs students anywhere, and enhance their educational mission, professional skills and personal career paths.

The M.A. at APU with an education concentration in education brings these to the participating educator Schools serving high-needs students in at-risk environments, with teachers using the proven principles and methods mastered in APU’s M.A. with a concentration in education degree, develop confident learners and produce high graduation rates

 

The CONCENTRATION IN FAMILY SYSTEMS & THERAPY is designed to facilitate careers in marriage and family counseling and prepared students (but does not guarantee) for national licensure by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

The CONCENTRATION IN LIBERAL STUDIES is designed for students and alumni work in various fields; they are engineers, writers, physicians, homemakers, administrators, CEOs, full-time parents, lawyers, librarians, journalists, teachers, computer programmers, and more. M.A. graduates find that their professional lives are enriched by the intellectual honing they go through in the program. Many alumni of colleges and universities in America who have earned a Master’s degree with a concentration in liberal studies find it excellent preparation for advancement in business, public service, and other career fields.
